GLOSSYBOX Unboxing: A Beauty Subscription Box

Glossybox Unboxing RODIAL

Due to my past experiences with Glossybox, I’m not really a big fan of subscription beauty boxes. For about six months I had a GB subscription, but I canceled it because it was underwhelming. You can read more about my GB experience here However, I’m still on their mailing list, and from time to time, I’m tempted to purchase their limited edition boxes (because those are usually the more impressive ones). So recently I caved, and purchased the Glossybox collaboration with the luxury skincare brand, Rodial.

Several year ago, before I started blogging, and before I knew anything about skincare, I purchased a few Rodial products. A very persuasive counter lady at Neiman Marcus convinced me that I needed this bougie brand for a radiant and youthful complexion. So I splurged, and I actually really liked all the products. That’s why I purchased the Glossybox Rodial limited edition box, because it has been a while since I tried any Rodial products.

RODIAL Dragon’s Blood

This brand is not available at Sephora, Ulta, or at your local drugstore. Glossybox made it easy and affordable for me to try this brand again for only $35. This subscription box contained 6 products from the Rodial Dragon’s Blood line (can we say Game of Thrones vibes). These skincare products are infused with Dragon’s Blood from the Croton Lechleri tree, which is just a creative and fancy way of saying…it’s tree sap.

There is not enough serious medical evidence to prove this tree sap is going to aid in anti-aging. So it’s a trendy and gimmicky ingredient. On a positive note, Dragon’s blood doesn’t interfere with any retinol or acids you might be using in your current skincare routine. Rodial Dragon’s Blood line claims it will give you smooth, plump and hydrated skin.

Dragon’s Blood Sculpting Gel

😍 | Deluxe mini $26 | Retail price $108

(I received the deluxe mini version) I have enjoyed using the sculpting gel. It has a cooling sensation, it’s hydrating, and silky soft. This Rodial sculpting gel has a sweet scent, one that is primarily associated with the majority of Rodial’s products. Just like its title states, this is a gel product. My skin absorbed this moisturizer fast, it didn’t just sit on top of my skin. I honestly liked the way this left my skin glowing. But, and there’s always a big but…buuuut I think this product is too overpriced.

The price point is not justified. I’m not impressed with the ingredients. I always research ingredients of my skincare products, and this one unfortunately doesn’t make the cut. Plus, I don’t like fragrance in my skincare (though this gel smells so nice). You’re paying for the extravagant and novelty packaging, and that it’s marketed as a luxury skincare brand. I would never go out of my way to purchase this, but I will finish the mini jar from this Glossybox unboxing. There are better, more affordable and more effective moisturizers available at your local drugstore.

2.

Glamolash Mascara XXL

👎👎👎 | Deluxe mini $13 | Retail price $30

The tube of mascara that I received is completely dried out. It’s powdery, and the bristles on the wand are caked with dry product. Gross. It’s a shame, because it is a descent size product (deluxe mini shown in image below). So I paid $35 for this “luxe” beauty box, and one of the products is trash 😡

3.

Dragon’s Blood Cleansing Water

👏👏👏 | Deluxe mini $25 | Retail price $45

( I received the deluxe mini version) I really do enjoy this micellar water. I like the way my skin looks after I use it. It leaves my face glowing and plump. But, would I purchase this $45 micellar water? NO. My Garnier micellar water does the job just as well, and it usually costs about $7, read more about this product here. Seven versus forty-five dollars, yeah, I’m good. But I’m glad I got to try it in this Glossybox unboxing.

I Wouldn’t Purchase The Micellar Cleansing Water For These 4 Reasons:

  • I don’t need all the extras. The key benefits from this Rodial micellar water are: Glycerin – which helps retain moisture. Niacinamide – helps brighten and smooth skin. Hyaluronic acid – Plumps and smooths skin and prevents moisture loss and helps retain moisture. Vitamin b3 – helps brighten skin. I already get all these amazing ingredients in all my other skincare products, learn more about my current skincare routine here So, I don’t really need my micellar water to have all these extra ingredients, because I already have them in my daily and nightly skincare routine.
  • I’m just going to wash it off anyways. I mainly use micellar water in the morning when I want to wipe off any gunk from my face. And then I immediately rinse my face. Micellar water leaves a residue or a film on skin, so I always rinse it off. If I run out of cleansing balm then I’ll use the micellar water to take off my makeup, then I’ll go in and wash my face again with another cleanser. In both scenarios the micellar water gets rinsed off regardless.
  • It contains fragrance. It contains Rosa Damascena Flower Water, which is considered a fragrance. I try to avoid fragrance in my skincare as much as possible, because I have sensitive skin.
  • It’s just too pricey. $45 for 10 oz for something that I rinse off. Nah, I’m good.

With all that being said, if fragrance in your skincare is not an issue for you, and you don’t mind the steep price tag, then this is a really nice micellar water.

Rodial Jelly Eye Patches

👎 | 2 x full size – $11 each

☹️ (I received two full size packs) I really wanted to like these eye patches. I’m obsessed with trying new sheet masks and eye patches. If you’ve been part of the CNP family for a while, then you know my favorite eye patches are the SHISEIDO Benefiance WrinkleResist24 Pure Retinol Express Smoothing Eye Mask, read more about them here So I have a couple holy grail eye patches already, but I was hoping these would become some of my must-haves. Unfortunately, these eye patches fell short and I did not enjoy the experience at all.

The packaging was tedious and difficult to open. The patches came in their own little plastic box, and they were also kept in between two plastic little slabs. And once I got them out of the container they were extremely difficult to grasp, they are flimsy, one slipped out of my fingers and fell on the floor. Also there wasn’t enough product on the patches, I could barely detect any product on my skin.

I am so glad I didn’t pay full price for these jelly eye patches. $11 for a single pack, I don’t recommend them at all.

5.

Dragon’s Blood Lip Mask

👎 | 2 x full size – $7 each

(I received two full size packs) These lip masks were not made for a human face. They covered my lips and my entire chin. They are so ridiculously humongous, not proportion to a normal face at all. They are flimsy, slippery, and hard to unravel. Where as the jelly patches were too overly packaged, these lip masks could have been packaged better. My lips did feel hydrated after applying the lip mask, but nothing I couldn’t replicate with all my other hydrating lip balms I already own. ☹️ It was an unpleasant experience all around, and I would never purchase these again.

Glossy Guide & Tips

Included with every Glossybox purchase is a Glossy guide/pamphlet. It’s actually very informative. The guide describes each item in the box, and explains how to use the products. It also provides skincare and makeup tips. This helpful guide lets you know the prices of the full size products, that way you know the value you’re getting for your money.

Beauty Subscription Boxes

This Glossybox experience validates my point, I’m glad I quit beauty subscription boxes, they are underwhelming. I also bought a beauty subscription box from Sephora once, and it was horrible, learn more about that purchase here Sadly, it will be a long time until I do another Glossybox unboxing, because this subscription beauty box service still manages to let me down in one way or another.

As for the RODIAL products in general, I liked them. I’m not crazy about their prices and I don’t use fragrance in my skincare. With all that being said, if fragrance in your skincare is not an issue for you, and you don’t mind the steep price tag, then this is a really nice luxury skincare brand to try. And even though this GB Rodial collaboration wasn’t the greatest, I’m still glad I purchased this limited edition box. All these products were valued at $100, and I got to sample all of them for $35, not too shabby I gotta say.

I’m with you about the glossy box subscription, there’s only so many travel sized hand creams one person can use, and I swear I was getting a new one every month 😂 Milli x http://millidavison.co.uk/

I have not personally tried a subscription box but I can see how it can be helpful. I am intrigued by the name alone but it is a little crazy that beauty products are costing an arm, a leg and then some! Great reviews though and I wouldn’t mind trying out the sculpting gel and micellar water solution. I hope your week is off to a great start!

I signed up to a couple of beauty subscriptions and whilst they were fun to receive every month, I agree I find it quite overwhelming and I end up gifting a lot of products that won’t work for my skin type! xx

It’s really a bummer how expensive these Rodial products are- like I could see justifying them if they were more affordable. But $45 for micellar water? That’s pretty steep! Thanks for the honest review, babe!

Caroline, I completely agree with your feedback. I think beauty subscription boxes are fun for a little while, but a lot of the beauty products do go to waste for a lot of reasons. Thank you for the lovely comment. Hope you have a beautiful day.

Ashley, yes, $45 for a micellar water is too much, especially when there are so many affordable ones available on the market. Glad you enjoyed the post. Hope you have a beautiful day 🙂

I used to be subscribed to beauty boxes but like you said I was underwhelmed and just got so many products that I never used. I do keep an eye out for special boxes like this one though!
