Lip Balms: Three Bougie Brands I Regret Buying.

Lip Balms

I’ve been using $3.99 Burt’s Bees Lip Balm for over ten years now, and, even my husband is hooked on it now. I can’t tell you how many of those affordable little tubes we have sitting around in our house.

However, on occasion, I like to try out popular bougie lip balms to see how they compare to my BBs. As indicated by the title of this post, the three lip products reviewed below did not compare at all to my ride-or-die Burt’s Bees chapstick.

Why?

Well, keep on reading and let me share my thoughts with y’all!

#1 LANEIGE – Lip Sleeping Mask

LIKES

  • PINK
  • Pretty
  • Portable – It’s small. Great for travel. The jar is durable.
  • Comes with little scooper – no dirty fingers in product.
  • Yummy aroma
  • Feels nice…at first
  • Soft scent, not too overwhelming
  • No parabens or phthalates
  • Not tested on animals

DISLIKES

  • $20 plus tax
  • Doesn’t work.
  • Doesn’t hydrate.
  • Lips still chapped after using as directed.
  • Too gimmicky
  • Leaves sticky residue
  • Leaves a thick and messy coat on lips.
  • Would have been better in a tube, jar is just too messy.
  • Too hyped up.
  • The scooper needs to be cleaned and sanitized after every use, it eventually becomes sticky & messy.
  • The clear, plastic baggy for the scooper gets gunky, goopy, and dirty if you don’t wipe the scooper off before inserting.
  • The entire experience was a hassle.
  • If you sleep on your stomach, then the ‘mask’ will end up on your pillow.
  • Does not help reduce flakiness as claimed.
  • No quick absorption as claimed.
  • Fragrance might irritate consumers with sensitive skin.

Btw, I never finished this product, I threw it away after several uses. This Laneige product has 7k reviews on Sephora’s website and it has 240k hearts, seriously? It won a 2018 GLAMOUR BEAUTY AWARD. I really wanted to love this product. I had huge expectations with this purchase and they all turned into disappointments after one single use.

The goopy product smells like strawberries, very sweet and yummy fragrance. It goes on thick, my lips are left bright & shimmery, and they stay that way for a while. However, after a couple of hours my lips are sticky, flaky and still chapped. It’s not very practical as a ‘lip sleeping mask’ especially if you sleep on your stomach, because it’s doomed to end up on your pillow. It doesn’t sink in immediately as claimed, it sits on top of your lips for a couple of hours, so a lot of this $20 product will end up on your bedding. You need to wipe the scooper after every use or else it sits in the plastic pouch, which becomes unsanitary after several uses. Overall, my entire experience with this lip mask was too sticky, too goopy, and too messy.

All positive/beneficial claims made by Laneige about their lip sleeping mask aren’t true, in my humble opinion.

I thought I was crazy for not liking this Laneige product, but I have read other negative reviews online (not too many, but they are out there) that share the same opinions as my own. Also, beware, if you have sensitive skin there is a fragrance associated with this product and it could irritate your lips.

#2 CHANEL ROUGE COCO BAUME

I encountered several rave reviews about Chanel’s Rouge Coco Baume online, so I thought I’d give it a try. Such a chic little accessory! Unfortunately, I’ll never make this $38 purchase again.

CHANEL describes their lip balm as: A moisture-rich lip balm with a hydrating formula that softens lips for a healthier and fuller appearance. In a sheer, satiny texture, ROUGE COCO BAUME glides on smoothly with a sumptuous, high-gloss finish. An advanced Hydratendre Complex smooths, protects and hydrates lips all day long.

3 Reasons Why I Don’t Agree With Chanel’s Description Of Their Coco Baume Lip Product:

  • This “hydrating conditioning lip balm” did nothing for my dry lips. It does not hydrate my lips all day long.
  • It goes on smooth but leaves my lips feeling dry.
  • Lip product lacks tenacity, I constantly need to reapply product.

#3 TATCHA CAMELLIA GOLD SPUN LIP BALM

This was my first official purchase from Tatcha. All their products are so girly and pretty. So, I ordered my Camellia Gold Spun Lip Balm from Tatcha.com and it was a satisfactory online experience. With my $30 purchase I got three samples and one travel size cleansing oil as well.

Tatcha does make an effort to appear as if they are trying to personally connect with their customers. The receipt was personally addressed to me, and they ended the letter with a hand written comment for me as well. Nice personal touch.

The lip balm came in a presentable box.

TATCHA.COM describes this item as: An intensely hydrating lip balm rich in Camellia Oil that absorbs quickly, leaving lips soft and touchable with a hint of 23-karat golden shimmer. Rich in Camellia oil, which helps seal in moisture. Packed with antioxidants and essential fatty acids to help nourish and protect.

LIKES

  • Gorgeous lip balm
  • Product itself is not sticky or gummy feeling.
  • Soft and soothing.
  • Smells like lemons, but it’s not that strong of a scent.
  • It does work pretty good, again, just not $30 good.

DISLIKES

  • Jar is not glass, more like an acrylic, plastic material. The lid is a plastic material as well.
  • Made to look luxurious, but handling it you can feel this isn’t lux at all, at least not $30 luxurious.
  • Gold flakes are gimmicky. They serve no purpose. If you do manage to get a few flakes of gold on your lips, it’s not that impressive. Please don’t buy this if you’re on a mission to look like a Golden Goddess, this will not make you look like one despite all the gold flakes in the product.
  • Not worth $30 dollars.
  • Glorified expensive chapstick.

Sometimes, there are products out there that is not worth the money. Burt’s Bees is the bee’s knees!! It is a bummer that these high end products didn’t work too well with you. Oh man, I expected more out of Chanel. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these- I’ll stay away from them!

I am also a huge fan of Burt’s Bees Lip Balm! Sometimes the least expensive items turn out to be the very best! I’ll definitely stay away from the others you mentioned.

What a nice idea for a blog post! Too bad the lip sleeping mask looked promising! Also I fully understand that the Chanel was a waste of time and money. I love their lipsticks with color but when it comes to lip balms I’d pick a classic like the Burt’s Bees Lip Balm.

    lots of love, Miri

Hahaha! I really like the Laneige lip mask. I don’t sleep on my tummy so it helps. I use a very thin coat and feels moisturizing. I have never tried the Burt’s Bees one. Now I am so tempted to check those out. The sugar lip balms are also very good. When it comes to luxury brands like Chanel, Dior I prefer buying lipsticks rather than spending lots of money on lip balm. 🙂

Via, I know the Lineage lip is very popular, so I’m not surprised you really like it. Believe me, I really wanted to like it too. I don’t know why this didn’t work on my lips? I need to try out those sugar lip balms, thanks for the tip 🙂 I agree, I like Chanel lipsticks but not the lip balms. Thanks so much for the lovely feedback 🙂
