RESURFACE Retinol Reform by Shani Darden
⊗ UPDATE: 6/20/2019 – I no longer will purchase retinol from this brand. The 3rd bottle of Resurface that I purchased had a horrible smell, none of the other bottles ever had that smell. I’ve lost faith in this brand, and I can no longer recommend this product ⊗
Retinol is a fabulous anti-aging ingredient to include in your beauty routine. I started using it three years ago, but, I probably should have started ten years ago. This is not going to be a post about retinol itself, because that will take too long. I’m just sharing my opinion about this serum that I’ve been using for the past three years, it’s probably the only retinol product that I’ve been using consistently.
So, I began my retinol journey with a low strength product that my dermatologist prescribed, BIG MISTAKE. I used too much, too soon and it was too strong. My face was constantly peeling, I had break outs, redness, and extreme dryness. So I quit the prescription, and bought an over the counter product, ‘RESURFACE’ Retinol Reform by Shani Darden.

* I do rotate between other retinol products, but the one that I keep coming back to is the RESURFACE Retinol Reform by Shani Darden. Below I’ve listed the pros & cons I associate with this purchase.
PROS
- Never had a negative reaction to this product
- Not too harsh on my face
- No scent
- Absorbs quickly into my skin
- Not greasy or oily – perfect if you have oily skin to begin with.
- Does not sting or it’s not painful
- My skin glows & looks dewy after every use.
- Gentle enough to eventually use every single night.
- Glass container, doesn’t feel cheap. Sleek design.
- Ideal for retinol beginners.
- Great for women in their 20’s & 30’s
CONS
- Expensive ($100) especially if you end up using this every night
- Not a great retinol if you’ve already got deep set wrinkles.
- Maybe not ideal if you’re in your 50’s and you’re looking for something stronger.
- Not easily accessible. You can’t purchase it at Ulta, Sephora or your local beauty store. You need to purchase on Shani Darden.com – need to pay for shipping.
- Small bottle for the steep price.

What can this retinol do for you:
- Boost collagen production
- Resurfaces your complexion [hence the name]
- It might help rosacea
- Helps fight acne
- Treats hyper-pigmentation, dark spots, and other signs of sun damage.
- An effective preventative serum to help reduce the appearance of fine lines before they begin.
How to include this product in your beauty routine:
- Begin slowly. Maybe for the first two months only use it twice a week, especially if you’re just beginning on the retinol path. Retinol is potent, you don’t want to irritate your face with using too much of it. It’s an ingredient you’re gonna wanna use forever, so there’s no rush, start off slow.
- You must use sunscreen! When you are using retinol your face can burn a lot more easily. If you can’t commit to using sunscreen religiously, don’t start.
- I wouldn’t use this retinol product on the same night that you’re going to use another strong, exfoliating product. Don’t use harsh products or ingredients on your face when using retinol, your face will be sore after.
- Avoid the eye area. Using too much retinol can ‘thin’ your skin. I made this mistake when I was on the prescription stuff, I noticed the skin under my eyes looked a lot thinner, and later realized it was because of the retinol.
- Anti-aging and healthy skin is a life long journey, be patient, and be consistent. Don’t quit this stuff because you don’t see results in two days. Give it six months, and then decide if it works or not.

I will admit the main reason I wanted to try this serum is because a lot of celebrities were bragging about their results. Even Kim Kardashian praised this retinol serum. There are thousands of retinol products on the market, and these chic celebrities praise ‘RESURFACE’ by Shani Darden, of course I needed it too! Do I think it’s a little over hyped? Yes. Do I think it works? I know it does. I will keep on purchasing this retinol serum, but eventually, unfortunately, in the not so distant future I will have to switch over to something a little bit more potent.
