Sephora’s PLAY: A beauty box that should just go away

Sephora’s PLAY: a subscription beauty box that should just go away

Sephora's Play package

SEPHORA’S PLAY

I did not subscribe to Sephora’s Play beauty box subscription. It was free with a promotion a couple months back. I was able to experiment with this beauty box without having to pay the actual $10 for it.

PLAY! by SEPHORA is a beauty subscription box filled with five trial-size samples that are delivered right to your door. Sephora’s Play is an attempt to help customers discover new beauty products. And encourage them to purchase the full size versions of the samples. It’s geared towards customers who love top brands, beauty junkies who love experimenting with new products, and anyone who is interested in stepping up their beauty game.

PLAY Beauty Subscription Box by Sephora

Customers who subscribe are asked to participate in a little beauty quiz. This creates an illusion that Sephora will curate a box especially for them. It is just a formality, because we all know everyone is going to get a nearly identical box each month. So the quiz is pointless.

This is only for customers in the United States.

Each monthly box contains:

  • 5 trial-size makeup, skincare, and hair-care samples from top brands (plus a beauty bonus!) worth up to $65.
  • A PASS redeemable in store or online with any purchase for 50 bonus Beauty Insider points that can be used to get even more samples.
  • A reusable, recyclable makeup bag.
  • PLAY! BOOK with tips, tricks, and how-tos about each sample.
  • Access to exclusive video how-tos and tutorials about how to use the products in your box

Pros & Cons:

  • (+) The PASS redeemable in store or online with any purchase for 50 bonus points is a very big plus. You can use these towards your rewards points on Sephora and get more samples. (Btw, because I got this box for free, I didn’t get the 50 bonus points.)
  • (+) Affordable. Not a bad price $10
  • (+) Fairly recognizable brands included in the beauty box. I had a problem with my Glossybox beauty subscription box, month after month, I got brands that I’ve never heard of. You can read my review of GLOSSYBOX here.
  • (+) Good for college students or individuals who are on a budget.
  • (+) Beneficial for bloggers or youtubers. Every month you get products you can blog/vlog about. Whether you like it or dislike it, it can be used as blog/vlog posts.
  • (X) The entire presentation feels cheap. It does not feel like a chic Sephora beauty purchase.
  • (X) Feels like this box is for preteen or teenage girls.
  • (X) Unimpressed by the mediocre products.
  • (X) Inferior and boring packaging.
  • (X) Horrible attempt to copy all the other beauty boxes on the market.
  • (X) Tacky
  • (X) The makeup bag that was included, well, it was just a plastic cheap ziplock type bag.

Alternatives To Sephora’s Play beauty box:

  • Sephora’s reward program
  • Make online purchases. With every online purchase Sephora gives you 2 beauty samples.
  • Utilize a Sephora Promo Code on their website. Usually your purchases need to exceed $25 or $35. You get two free samples plus you get products with your promo code.
  • Use your points from Sephora’s reward program. These points can add up pretty quick and you get new little products to try out as well.
  • Combine these tips. Once you start combining these tips with your purchases you’ll notice that you will get a lot of samples without having to pay an extra $10 for this horrible beauty box.

SEPHORA Subscription Beauty Box

  • Consider buying the travel size products that are displayed near the checkout and cashier areas in the Sephora stores. They may be a little bit more expensive, but you can pick out exactly what you wanna try out. That’s the thing with these beauty boxes, you pay $10 a month, and you don’t even know if you’ll like what you’re going to get.

Beauty Samples

  • Try out different stores and experiment with their reward programs. Nordstrom includes 2 free samples with every beauty purchase. Ulta has a lucrative reward program as well.

Sephora’s Play Subscription Box

Sephora’s PLAY beauty subscription box is a waste of money. There are so many different ways to get free samples and trial size products. If you insist on participating in a beauty subscription box purchase, then experiment with other companies that have been around for a long time: Birchbox, Ipsy, Glossybox, Scentbird, FabFitFun, and POPSUGAR.

The majority of the other beauty box companies depend on the successful income from their subscriptions, which means they put more effort into their final product. It is painfully apparent that Sephora doesn’t care or fully rely on the revenue generated by their beauty boxes. You need to step up your beauty box subscription game, Sephora.

I’m so jealous that we can’t get these Sephora boxes in the Netherlands. They are so much better than other beautyboxes on the market right now. Lovely products and a great selection of brands! Love it!!
