Carlsbad Flower Fields
Carlsbad – The Springtime event of the year!
My husband and I like to devote at least one day out of the year to take a small road trip to the Carlsbad Flower Fields in San Diego. It is a special, yearly ritual for us. We feel this destination in its full bloom symbolizes the beginning of Spring and the beauty of life. And just like life, this flowery heaven is only around for a short amount of time, like about six to eight weeks. The flowers are in bloom in early March to early May, and then they are gone. This year we drove down there in the first week of April and it was magical, whimsical, and awe-inspiring.
Carlsbad ‘Flower Field’ Necessities ~ Don’t Forget To Bring:
- A sun hat or umbrella
- Sunscreen
- Water
- Comfortable shoes
- A light jacket or sweater
- Snacks
- Camera
- Money
Seriously, the sun is no joke when you spend an afternoon at The Carlsbad Flower Field. It is about 50 acres, and once you get out on to the field there aren’t too many shady locations to shield yourself from the sun. A large sun hat, scarf, sunglasses or an umbrella is an absolute must. Sunscreen is another must.
First of all, it takes about 15 or 20 minutes to find parking on a busy day, so you don’t want to have to park and then decide that you need to find the nearest little store to stock up on water and snacks. Bring plenty of water and snack because you might get hungry walking around that big plot of land. Also, food is sold there but it’s expensive and unhealthy. I’d rather bring my own stuff, and then splurge on a nice meal after, and that’s just what we did.
There is going to be a lot of walking, so make sure to bring your sneakers. If you wanna take some glamour shots with some pretty shoes (you do you, beautiful) just make sure to bring some comfy shoes to change into after.
This location is very close to the ocean, so it’s pretty breezy and as the sun starts going down it can get a little chilly. Bring a light jacket or sweater.
Umm, yeah, make sure you bring your camera and all its necessities. If you’re only gonna use your phone, make sure it is fully charged. If you’re gonna go hard core and use a handheld camera, make sure you have your camera bag fully stocked. Again, this is a large plot of land, you don’t want to be way out there, and realize you forgot something, then you’ll have to hike back to your car.
Money y’all! This place ain’t cheap. Adults $16 Children $8. Plus, whatever you end up buying once you pass through the entrance gates, because they have little souvenir shops. Obviously, the price isn’t too bad for just my husband and I, but for a big family, it can add up.
On the weekends this popular tourist destination can get very crowded. If you choose to go on Saturday or Sunday it will take a while to find parking, so beware. I’d recommend to go in the middle of the week if you can, just to avoid the crowds. Honestly, it gets a little disheartening to go when there’s a massive amount of people because many of them cross over the barriers to get their glamour shots, and they trample the flowers in doing so.
Also, if the weather is lovely on the weekend, then expect bad traffic. Seriously, we left the house early in the morning from LA and we arrived around 4:30 pm, but we did stop and had a lovely lunch in Temecula. We weren’t rushing, but the traffic was just horrible. So keep that in mind when planning your road trip to Carlsbad.
Pack a picnic and enjoy this serene location with your loved ones. There are plenty of secluded spots around the 50 acres to have a private and romantic lunch. Are you an amateur photographer? Bring your camera gear and spend all day taking spectacular, nature pictures. Enjoy the sun, weather, and the flowers.
There are tractor rides available as well, which is very convenient because if you or someone in your party can’t do all the walking, then a fun tractor ride around the field should be right up your alley. Of course the rides are kind of pricey.
The Carlsbad Flower Fields are an annual burst of color & magic.
Honestly, the delicate flowery bulbs looked like candy. They appeared delicious, sweet and magical. A masterpiece created by nature that only blooms once a year. My favorite section was the pink row of the flower field. That’s where I took the majority of my pictures, can you tell? But admiring the entire field with all the different rows of colors took my breath away also. If you’d like a Spring yearly ritual, besides Easter, than I recommend this majestic destination.
