5 Essentials For A Great Christmas Tree
Christmas movies (A Charlie Brown Christmas). Sipping hot cocoa by the fireplace. Sweet kisses under the mistletoe. Gingerbread cookies. Snowmen. Santa Clause. Reindeers and elves. What a magical time of year.
However, Christmas doesn’t feel like Christmas without a tree, even if it’s a small one. So tis the season to be jolly with a beautiful Christmas tree that twinkles and glows.
Below are 5 essentials for a great Christmas Tree

The Tree
This is obvious, but the first step to having a great Christmas tree is to actually purchase a tree. Here’s what to consider before purchasing your next Christmas tree.
Artificial Christmas Trees
Many People prefer the artificial option. They are not as messy and they benefit people who are allergic to real trees. Also, artificial trees last about 10 years depending on how you take care of them. The majority of them come with their own stands, a warranty, and a storage bag. They should also be fire retardant and fade resistant. When purchasing an artificial tree keep in mind that you want a good quality tree that will last you for years to come.
- Prelit | They can be more expensive. You can’t change the size or color of the lights from year to year. The beauty of this kind of tree you won’t have to deal with tangled lights.
- CNP TIP: Look for “continuous on” or “with burn-out protection” this means if a single bulb burns out the rest of the lights stay on.
- Accented | These trees are dusted with fake snow or glitter. Some include pinecones, holly or berries. Remember these additional permanent elements can’t be changed from year to year.
- Size | Determine the best size for your home. Do you prefer a full, slim, or pencil size. Allow for at least 12 inches from the ceiling and six inches from the wall. Be mindful of where you are going to place your tree, you don’t want it obstructing a walkway, basically you want it placed in a safe area where it won’t be in your way.
- Material | PVC or PE. PVC (less realistic) needles are attached to the fake tree branches using wires, these type of trees only look realistic from afar. With the PE (more realistic) option the needles and branches replicate the look of a real tree.
Real Christmas Trees
The pine scent of a real tree that spreads throughout the house is intoxicating. So pick the right tree and make it last throughout the holiday season. This way it can be the centerpiece in your living room for weeks to come. Also, when purchasing a real tree you are supporting your local small business.
- Size | Determine the best size for your home. Do you prefer a small 3 or 4 ft size tree, which are actually so much fun and adorable (we had one last year, it was a less fussier experience). Or do you have tall ceilings and you want a massive 8 or 9 ft size statement tree. Again, just remember to allow for at least 12 inches from the ceiling and six inches from the wall.
- Location | Be aware of where your heating vents are in your home. You don’t want your gorgeous real tree placed directly under a heating vent or it won’t last for the entire holiday season. Also, you don’t want your tree obstructing a heavy traffic area, you want it placed in a safe area where it won’t be in the way.
Tips & Tricks For Your Tree
- Make Your Tree Last | (1) Again, don’t place your tree directly under a heating vent or near a fireplace. You don’t want to dry your tree out. (2) Pick a healthy tree from the start. Be aware of the condition of the tree: you don’t want brittle, brown branches and needles. Give it a good shake, if the needles easily fall off, then it’s not the best choice. (3) Cut off a layer of the bottom of the tree trunk, this will allow for easier water absorption – they usually do this for you at the lot where you buy your tree. (4) Make sure your tree stays well hydrated, you don’t want to have a dry tree. Dry trees can cause fires. (5) Don’t forget to trim your tree. Keep some heavy duty scissors on hand, or garden shears to trim any branches that stick out too far or are out of place. Also, you will need to trim the bottom of the tree to leave some space for gifts.
- CNP TIP: Spray your tree with Wilt Stop. It is an all-natural, non-toxic spray made from pine resins that helps keep your tree from drying out.

Christmas Tree Lights
You most definitely need functioning string lights that you will wrap around your tree for that twinkle and glow effect. Most importantly make sure that they are safe, you don’t want any exposed wires. Also make sure your lights function properly.
Don’t make the mistake of wrapping a string of lights around your tree but then they don’t work. If you have old lights, stock up on some new ones.
Decide what bulb shapes and styles you want. Keep in mind how many light strands you will need to cover the entire tree. Do you want them all white? Or do you prefer multicolored Christmas lights?
There are LED and Incandescent Christmas lights. LED’s use less energy than Incandescent ones and they last longer. Incandescent lights are more affordable than LED’s and they have a warm glow.
