Horror Novels For Spooky Season

Classic Horror Novels

October (aka: Halloween/Spooky season) is just around the corner and what better way to get into the spine-tingling mood than to devour horror novels. When I was in 4th grade my babysitter unwittingly left her Edgar Allan Poe book at my house, thus began my literary love affair with this American gothic writer. Poe’s tales of mystery and macabre are pure horror magic. The Cask Of Amontillado is my favorite Poe story ever – I’ve lost count how many times I’ve read it.

Terrifying Literary Classics

  • 1) INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE (Anne Rice): This book is all about Vampires. Just like the title states. Louis de Pointe du Lac, a vampire, gives his chilling and shocking memoir to an intrigued reporter. Lestat de Lioncourt and Claudia are hypnotic vampires that play a major part in Louis’s chillingly sensual life story.
  • 2) THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE (Shirly Jackson): In this unnerving novel we follow the spooky adventures of Dr. Montague, Theo, Eleanor, and Luke at the haunted Hill House. Unfortunately, they realize too late that this mansion is powerful and terrifying.
  • 3) THE EXORCIST (William Peter Blatty): Published in 1971, it was controversial and a major literary hit. It spent 57 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. The book focuses on Regan, an eleven-year-old daughter of a movie actress. Regan becomes possessed by a demon and needs an exorcism performed on her so she can be rescued from her terrifying fate.

Horror Novels For Halloween

  • 4) RING (Koji Suzuki) : A mysterious videotape warns that the viewer will die in one week unless a certain, unspecified act is performed. Exactly one week after watching the tape, four teenagers die one after another of heart failure.
  • 5) GHOST STORY (Peter Straub) : In the sleepy town of Milburn, New York, four old men gather to tell each other stories—some true, some made-up, all of them frightening. But one story is coming back to haunt them and their small town.
  • 6) CARRIE (Stephen King) : Carrie White has a gift. She can move things with her mind. This is her power and her problem. Plus, she is also bullied incessantly by her peers. So, is Carrie a victim or a weapon of horror? Buy the book and you decide.
  • 7) WHISPERS (Dean Koontz) : This is a haunting psychological thriller filled with many twists and turns. Bruno Frye is a mentally disturbed man that is haunted by whispers from his past. These whispers cause him to kill. Period. That’s all ya need to know. No spoilers here. Ya have to read the book for the juicy stuff!

Chilling Reads

  • 8) THE LAST WEREWOLF (Glen Duncan): Another werewolf book, and another monstrous thriller, but with a not so normal plot. Jake Marlowe is the last werewolf, the last of his kind. He’s just a little over 200 years old, but he has lost the will to live. Can this suicidal werewolf find passion for life again?
  • 9) THE RUINS (Scott Smith): Trapped in the Mexican jungle, a group of friends stumble upon ancient ruins. Thus begins creeping horror unlike anything they could ever imagine.
  • 10) THE TURN OF THE SCREW (Henry James): After losing both parents, a young boy and girl move into a large wooded estate. They are to be cared for by their uncle. However, the uncle hires a nanny and delegates the job to her. The new nanny shortly realizes the children are not normal and they have a connection to the supernatural world. Can you say, “creepy af.”

Spooky Season Horror Novels

  • 11) EDGAR ALLEN POE : If you are a true fan of literary horror then this author needs no introduction. I absolutely adore Edgar Allen Poe’s work. The Fall of the House of User, The Pit and the Pendulum, and The Tell-Tale Heart. My absolute favorite of all time is The Cask of Amontillado.
  • 12) MISERY (Stephen King): Paul Sheldon is a bestselling novelist who gets into a horrific automobile accident that shatters his body. Annie Wilkes is the nurse that tends to him from her home in an isolated location. Annie is Paul’s number one fan, unfortunately, Annie is also a lunatic killer.
  • 13) DRACULA (Bram Stoker): Count Dracula has a castle in Transylvania, but he can also transform into a bat because he is a vampire. Wanna read about sleepwalking, blood loss, malady, puncture wounds, and more horrifying incidents? Then you must read this classic, supernatural horror novel asap!

I am not a fan of horror. I remember in 4th grade, I had to stop reading Chamber of Secrets for a bit because I got scared.

OMG I fell in love with Edgar Allen Poe around the 4th grade too. I grew up around my uncles, who were in high school during the time. So I always read books that they had lying around.

Another one of my classic favorites is Frankenstein. It’s nothing like the movies and if you’re into Gothic literature, you’ll love it!

I’ll have to read more Stephen King novels. Thanks for sharing this list!

I’ve read Dracula and The Turn of the Screw and they are both amazing classics. I would recommend them as Halloween reads for sure. I also read most if not all works by Edgar Allan Poe- I adore him! He is one of the best writers ever.

Valerie, nice to chat with another fellow Poe lover 🙂 Yes, I would read my older brother’s books as well when he was in high school and I was in elementary school. I will seriously take up reading Frankenstein, thanks for the suggestion. So glad you enjoyed the post. Thank you for the lovely comment.
